Walk the perimeter slowly, holding the detector away from your body and your phone. Scan walls, outlets, smoke detectors, clocks, lamps, picture frames, air vents, ceiling fixtures, furniture, and electronics. Keep movements slow and deliberate. Moving too quickly can make it difficult to recognize where the signal begins to increase.
As you move, watch for repeatable changes. A legitimate signal from outside the room usually stays relatively broad or becomes weaker as you move deeper into the space. Another mistake is treating every alert as proof of surveillance. Modern spaces are full of RF energy. An alert is an investigative lead, not a final answer. Confirming the source protects you from unnecessary panic and helps you focus on what is actually unusual.
Rushing is equally costly. A fast pass through a room may find an obvious transmitter, but it can miss a low-power device, a transmitter hidden behind furniture, or a tracker that reports only occasionally. Plan enough time to make multiple passes at different sensitivity levels.
Finally, do not expect RF detection alone to find every threat. Wired cameras, dormant devices, recorders, and non-transmitting trackers require other counter-surveillance methods. A visual hidden-camera inspection, physical vehicle check, and specialized equipment such as a non-linear junction detector may be appropriate when you need a more complete technical sweep.
When an alert becomes evidence
If you locate a device you believe is unauthorized, document it before moving it. Photograph its location, note the date and time, and avoid handling it more than necessary. In stalking, workplace, legal, or criminal matters, the device and its placement may be evidence.
